Dave was born on Dec. 19, 1959 in Damariscotta, Maine.  He is the oldest of five children.  Dave attended schools in Oakland and Fairfield. He was an iron worker and a member of the Iron Workers Union Local 15 for many years.   Before becoming an iron worker he worked in the beautiful woods of Maine as a wood cutter.  Throughout his life he lived and worked in many states.  Dave was a hard worker and lived his life to the fullest.  He had numerous friends and was known as Stretch and Big Dave to many.  He enjoyed horseshoes, country music, Nascar racing and camping.  He was an avid fan of the New York Giants and enjoyed spending time with friends.  Dave loved to come to Maine and spend time with his family.

Dave will be sadly missed.  He was kind and friendly to everyone.  He had a larger than life personality.  When meeting him for the first time people instantly liked him.  If someone was in need Dave would always help them out and gave whatever he could.   He was very protective of his family and friends.

Dave was predeceased by his mother, Joan Westman of Fairfield and his father, Frank Gruhn Sr. of Waldoboro.  He is survived by his sister Mary Bixby and her husband Joseph of Oakland, brother Frank Gruhn of Fairfield, nephew Christopher Gruhn of Fairfield, brother Robert Westman and sister-in-law Bobbi-Jo of Oakland, and sister Patricia Hagerty, brother-in-law Patrick and niece Emily Hagerty of Clinton, step-nephews Dorian and Zachary French of Fairfield, step-niece Ashley Trembly of Old Hickory, TN, step-niece Danielle Bixby of Smithfield and her daughter Claire Bell of Smithfield, his Aunt Jeanette Wells of Melrose, MA, close friend Veronica Renock of Bristol, CT, many cousins and numerous friends.

A private burial with family and close friends will be held at a later date.  The family would like to thank the nurses and doctors at Bristol Hospital for taking care of Dave and for being so kind.
